When you leave your house to embark upon a journey, there are many things that you must see to. There are bills to pay, pets or plants to arrange care for, and tidying up to do before walking out the door. In a full life with many joys and cares, relationships and obligations, the list can be very long. But when you make your exit from this lifetime, there is nothing more for you to do. The door closes on its own behind you. And there is no need to lock it because you won’t be coming back.
For the person whose faith is deep and tranquil, all of life is just like this. There are things you may accomplish on a given day, and those you may not. Places you may go, and place you may not. Whatever cares you carry over from today to tomorrow are burdens you foist upon yourself. There is only going forward. There is no going back. In the meantime, the things you must do today are manageable and few.
A truth this simple is difficult for human beings to grasp. Time is not your enemy or your adversary. Time is a blessing, renewed with each breath, that brings with it infinite lightness, freedom, and joy. A person may realize the truth of this right up until the last moment of life.
The soul is your passport to eternity. But do not wait until the end of life to use it. A soul is the birthright of all who are born with bodies. All bodies travel endlessly through time.
