You will have noticed that, when you act against your own true nature, doing the thing that your heart knows to be wrong or misguided, you slowly lose your confidence. Your path through life then becomes difficult, uncertain, and filled with obstacles. Most people experience this at one time or another in their lives. But the dissatisfaction—the feeling of dissonance that comes from straying from the path of the heart’s desire—this becomes its own natural corrective. In this way, sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly, you find your way back to the path that is satisfying and sure.
There are those who struggle more in this way than others. But even they can amend their lives. Through reflection, honesty, and the support of good friends, their health, their happiness, and their good fortune can be restored.
But what becomes of a people who fall away from the path they know to be just and true? Can they bring themselves back to the way they were on before they strayed?
The path of a people is determined by the many souls who take it—by the choices they make, and their willingness or unwillingness to respond to the intimations of their better nature. This is what determines the course of a people. A people is comprised of many separate individuals, none of whom, acting alone, can determine the course of the whole.
You are responsible for the path you are on. In listening to your heart and doing what it knows to be good and true, your influence will spread. You cannot steer the larger events of history as they unfold; nevertheless, as you remain true to your own path, the truth of that path will be felt by those around you. Strong hearts give courage to the hearts of those beside them. You will give confidence to one another as you journey together. In this way, gradually, as that confidence spreads, a new path and a new people will be born.
As one people ends, another begins. This is how that happens. So look to your own heart and know that the path you are following is not for you alone.
