The way of thinking that rules the collective mind of your people is that more is better. But I tell you that less is better. That smaller is safer. That simpler is wiser, more certain, and more assured.
A puff of wind parts the grasses of a field and gathers its fellows as it goes, growing and massing, pulling vapor from streams and puddles, rivers, lakes, and inland seas, until it has become a storm.
You have learned to track the greatest of these storms, to follow them with your instruments in an endeavor to predict where they will go. But you have no understanding of small things, how they combine and collaborate with one another to move the vast energies that disrupt or stabilize a climate.
You gaze at the sky without noticing where you stand. You give great attention to what is said among you, but no thought whatsoever to the breath that makes your words. Life is close, immediate, intimate, and real. If you live in the space that directly surrounds your body, and learn to attend to its various signs and signals, you will recover the basis for true wisdom. This is your only hope.
If you ask Me what you should believe in, what you should have faith in, how you should live, or where you should direct your effort, My answer would be the same: Become close, small, intimate, and real, beginning with your body and its environs, and I will show you step by step the path that lies ahead.
