“My advice to you now is to find a place that steadies you—a place that gives you courage, wisdom, and perspective. Each of you knows the place I speak of. Each of you has a place to go that centers you, because that place IS your center.
“You have been taught to believe that the world lies within you, when in truth the world lies without. That which you call the inner world lies fully revealed before you. It is spread out over the whole earth and you do not see it.
“Once you know this—and you can discover it by walking, hiking, riding a bike, or simply stepping outside your door—you will know where your heart is, and you can go to that place to find solace and guidance. Once everyone knew how to find the place of the heart in the world. Some still do.
“If you wish (if you are confused about where to turn, or where to seek) you may simply pray the rosary, treating the beads like footsteps, letting your mind wander through the memories of your days. It sometimes happens that by turning within, you can find that which lies without.
“These inner maps to outer places are different for each person. They will not all be the same. But you must find your place if you want to feel peace in these times. You will know when you have reached it because your feet will feel like they are putting down roots, and your head will feel clear and open like the spreading branches of a tree.
“This is important work for these times. You needn’t worry if you live in a city. The Earth is everywhere beneath your feet. There are no exceptions. No one lives in the sky.”
